It is great to see the momentum for an EU Action Plan for Plant-Based Foods growing across sectors! Over 130 organizations, including #EAPF members, along with representatives from the consumer, food, environmental, and health sectors, have come together in a unified joint position to advocate for this important step. 💡 This collaborative effort underscores the urgent need for a clear and impactful roadmap to promote sustainable food systems and #plantbaseddiets. We believe the #EU Action Plan must: 🚀 Establish a clear roadmap: A well-defined action plan with concrete targets and timelines is essential to encourage the production, promotion, and consumption of plant-based foods. It must align with the European Green Deal, Fit for 55, and the EU’s biodiversity, food security, and just transition goals. 🌍 Tackle multiple crisis: A plant-based food system offers a solution to reducing emissions, protecting biodiversity, and building resilience to climate change. It can also strengthen food security and improve health outcomes for communities across Europe. 📏 Harmonize efforts across the EU: With clear targets, member states can develop coordinated national strategies, ensuring the benefits of plant-based food systems are felt across the region. ⬇️ Read the letter below:

Insights from the Europe North to South: food system challenges and solutions event in Brussels! 🌍 Hosted by the European Environmental Bureau, the event underscored the urgent need for a holistic approach to transform our food system into one that is environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. Here are some key takeaways: 🌱 Tomaso Ferrando from the University of Antwerp stressed the importance of a systemic and just transition in food governance, echoing Amartya Sen's words "there is no such thing as an apolitical food problem." 🍅 Ecologistas en Acción shed light on the hidden costs of export-oriented agribusinesses in Spain, emphasizing the negative impact on local ecosystems and workers' rights. 🚜 Juchowo Farm showcased a successful model of revitalizing land through sustainable agricultural practices, demonstrating the potential for positive change. 🍽 Public procurement and meal systems emerged as powerful drivers for sustainable food choices, highlighting the role of public-private partnerships in fostering behavioral change. The event underscored promising initiatives and serious challenges in the European food system, emphasizing the need for diverse solutions and constructive dialogue. As Isabel Paliotta fittingly summarized at the end of the event, "One-size-fits-all solutions are destined to fail." Let's continue working together to create more resilient and equitable food systems! 🖋 For further highlights from the event, check out our PATHWAYS blog post: https://lnkd.in/dnTP3Zk6 Links to the recording of the presentations 👉 https://lnkd.in/dniUDbj5 https://lnkd.in/dU5BgSBX #sustainability #sustainablelivestock #sustainablefoodsystems #EUAgenda

🧐 What if Europe’s food system actually supported farmers, protected the planet, and made healthy food accessible to all? Right now, it doesn’t—but it could. 📢 A coalition of organizations, including Slow Food, is calling on Christophe Hansen and the European Commission to create an EU Action Plan for #PlantBased Foods by 2026. Why? Because : ❌ 66% of EU animal feed is imported—undermining food sovereignty. ❌ 80% of Europeans don’t eat enough wholegrains, legumes, fruits & veggies. ❌ Industrial agriculture fuels the #ClimateCrisis, while destroying #Biodiversity & soils. The solution? A shift towards sustainable, plant-rich food systems that: ✅ Support farmers with fair pay & new business opportunities ✅ Reduce dependence on imports & boost EU-grown crops ✅ Improve public health & cut hidden food costs (€900B/year!) ✅ Help the EU meet its climate & environmental goals Read the open letter signed by over 130 NGOs 👉 https://bit.ly/42oqWAe

🔴 Live now Tune into Euractiv's live event, where our own Faustine Bas-Defossez will be discussing how the EU can finance its way to resilient and sustainable food systems 💸 Europe’s current food systems cost EU taxpayers billions each year (€19 billion in France alone!) 🤯 With the cost of inaction multiplying each year, the EU cannot afford to delay the urgently needed transition to sustainable food systems. But minor tweaks to existing policy and technofixes alone are nowhere near enough - as the Strategic Dialogue concluded "business-as-usual is not an option". 🛍 Europe must move past the ‘responsible consumer’ narrative and enable change at each stage of the value chain. This means tackling both production AND consumption at every level, including the overconsumption of animal proteins which has led the EU to be a net importer of calories 👎 https://lnkd.in/eyYAGtg7 Read on to learn how Europe's Food Systems can change for the better https://lnkd.in/edub2deu and how the changes that the Common Agricultural Policy, which makes up a third of the EU budget, must undergo to help bring about this change https://lnkd.in/e3Rdhts9 #FoodSystems #SustainableFoodSystems #StrategicDialogue #Farm2Fork #CAP

🎊 On this 🇪🇺 #EuropeDay, let's take the time to celebrate various actors making waves to transform the European #foodsystem. #Climatechange, geopolitical tensions, and consumer access to healthy and flavorful food: those are just a few of the numerous concerns affecting our food systems that require immediate attention. 🌐 #FOODPathS is striving to address these challenges: ✅ The project is collaborating with researchers, farmers, industry representatives, NGOs, policymakers, and public and private investors to establish a European Partnership 🤝 ✅ The project seeks to fund #R&I activities for healthy and sustainable food production and consumption in Europe. The project held the 6th Funders Forum meeting on 23-24 April, in which the design of the funding program and other related topics were discussed (the meaning of the "food systems approach", the cross-disciplinarity required by the research system, and much more). Are you curious about the main takeaways from the discussion? 🔍 This post summarizes key lessons from the Funders Forum and the experts' presentations. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gTemf-ek

📢 Europeans are awakening to the fundamental flaws in our #FoodSystem and calling for change. They are demanding a system that puts people before profit, protects our ecosystems, and defends the rights of food producers, consumers and all those in between. ⏱️With 30 days to go until we vote in the European Parliament elections (6-9 June), as part of the EU Food Policy Coalition, we've had a close look at how our elected MEPs - and the groups they belong to - have positioned themselves on issues related to food and farming in Europe over the last mandate (2019-2024). 📊Following a simple methodology of analysing open-source data on MEP voting behaviours, we have segmented the results across the following five categories: 1️⃣ FOOD SYSTEMS TRANSITION 2️⃣ ACCESS TO HEALTHY & SUSTAINABLE DIETS 3️⃣ SOCIAL JUSTICE FOR FARMERS & CITIZENS 4️⃣ NATURE-FRIENDLY FARMING 5️⃣ ETHICAL ANIMAL PRODUCTION Curious to learn more? Follow our profile for updates. Leading up to the elections, we'll share weekly insights on how various EU Parliament political groups performed. Can't wait?
